Washington state is home to more than 130 accredited colleges and universities. This total includes 19 four-year public universities, 28 one and two-year public colleges, 26 four-year private non-profit schools, and 54 private for-profit institutions. The largest college systems in the Evergreen State include the University of Washington, with three locations; Washington State University, with four; and Everest College, with six campuses.

As of the fall of 2010, more than 438,000 students were enrolled at the various institutions in this Pacific Northwest state. This count includes about 94,000 undergraduates enrolled at public four-year schools and nearly 22,000 graduate students enrolled at the same institutions, as well as more than 51,000 students attending private four-year institutions, and roughly 270,000 students enrolled at technical and community colleges.
